Meet the Crossroads Block

This week’s Crossroads block features bold geometry and a sense of movement that makes it stand out beautifully in a quilt. Depending on your layout plan, you may want to make two versions of the block — either identical or with fabric variations. The versatility is part of the fun!

Pro tip: Print out the PDF pattern and attach your fabric swatches to keep everything organized — it’s a small step that makes a big difference.

Watch the Tutorial with Annie

To help you piece the Crossroads block with confidence, Moda’s own Annie walks you through the construction step by step in our video tutorial. If you're a visual learner or just want some company while you sew, be sure to watch the embedded video below.

From half square triangles (HSTs) to bar units and final block assembly, Annie covers it all with helpful tips and tools she loves — including her go-to fussy cut ruler for trimming those perfect 3½" units.

Step Highlights

Here's a quick overview of what you'll learn in the video:

1. Make Your Half Square Triangles

Start by creating HSTs using your background fabric and Fabric B. If you're new to HSTs, don’t worry — we’ve also linked to a more detailed tutorial by Jessie to help you master this foundational technique.

2. Construct the Bar Units

Next up are the simple but striking bar units. You’ll sew two units in the A-E-A layout and two in the A-C-A layout. The key here is to pay attention to your fabric placement so the visual design flows correctly.

3. Trim with Precision

Annie demonstrates her favorite way to trim using a 3½" fussy cut ruler. Whether you prefer a traditional square ruler or something more specialized, accurate trimming ensures your block comes together beautifully.

4. Final Assembly

Assemble your units into rows, paying close attention to color placement so your "arrow" points align just right. The HSTs in the corners give the block a bit of a churn dash feel — a fun, subtle nod to quilting tradition.

And voilà — your Crossroads block is ready!

Thank You, Lynne!

A huge thanks to Lynne Hagmeier for sharing this wonderful design. Whether you're making just one or building a whole quilt of Crossroads blocks, we know you’ll love how it turns out.

Don’t forget to post your progress on social media with the hashtag #ModaBlockheads so we can cheer you on!

We’ll see you back here next week for Block 3 and more Blockheads 6 fun. Until then, happy quilting!
